New sewing mission opened in Kotari

Archangel Michael Mission in Pakistan has launched a new outreach mission through St Anthony’s Parish in Kotari, Hyderabad. This initiative is setup to teach young women from poor and marginalized backgrounds skills to give them a foundation for independence in the future.

The aim is to provide skill training to girls of our parish and local area to make them self sufficient and useful members of community and family. The sewing center has been started with 4 sewing machines, with the hope to add more in the future. The girls will start their day with opening prayer and this way we can introduce Orthodoxy to the non Orthodox girls and through these girls we can reach out to their families.

At the moment four girls can start the classes which run in the afternoon from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Monday to Friday. Their full training will complete in one year. In the beginning the mission has hired a small workroom for this center, with plans to expand to a larger premises and more machines over time. The girls will learn skills of sewing, stitching, embroidery, handicrafts and dress designing in one year. The trainer has volunteered her services for first two months and then after two months the parish will pay her salary.

This center is started in Kotari which is one of the two towns where we have our Orthodox communities in the Hyderabad region in Sindh. In the future if this is successful and with support of the other community it is hoped to setup a similar center in Issa Nagri, the other community of St Anthony’s parish in Hyderabad.
